…after our crossing of the Alps from Geneva to Ljubljana in 2022, which unfortunately didn’t end so well, this time we went directly south from Geneva to Nice. The routes were all a little shorter than in 2022, but with more meters in altitude, a bit nasty, when people plan something like that who are traveling in flyweight :-). I definitely had a lot of respect for the route. On the other hand, the tour is practically a âbucket listâ sequence of Tour de France monuments, with the Col de La Bonette, the highest Alpine road in Europe, as the highlight. This time we were a very large group of almost 40 people (including the supply and organization team, thank you again at this point, Jojo, Charlize, Manja), which posed some real challenges for the hotels and restaurants. On Saturday morning we drove from Berlin to Geneva in our supply vehicle, fortunately without any traffic jams, so we arrived at the hotel around 7 o’clock in the evening. Then we went to the kick-off dinner together, where the trouble started for me… Unfortunately, I couldn’t stand the very oily food at all and so spent most of the night in the âceramics departmentâ and wasn’t particularly fit on the first tour to Chamonix…but perfect weather and a dream arrival in a very nice hotel.
The next day I decided to take a day off to give my stomach a chance and went on the âparty busâ with Jojo and Charlize. A good rest with the opportunity to take a few photos. In the evening, a very nice walk in beautiful Aosta.
Day 3 – a new attempt on the bike. A nice start with Anna and Jenny, but then unfortunately a crucial mistake on the climb to the small âBernardinoâ…a âRed Bullâ on the climb in combination with the exertion completely turned my stomach again, and so I had stomach cramps until the next stage hotel.
On day 4, I decided to stay on the bus again, as apart from the beautiful Col de la Madeleine, I had already ridden most of the route twice on the Marmotte and I wanted to be really fit again for the other days. That’s why âparty busâ and drone flying/photography were on the program again. About 1km before the Galibier summit, however, I had to get the bike out of the trunk and at least enjoy the fantastic descent to Briancon…
The next day continued over the Col d’Izoard and Col de Vars, enjoyed very relaxed with Sören and Martin…again perfect weather and a fantastic landscape. Stomach was ok and the toilet paper stayed in the jersey đ
Day 6 was the highlight in my eyes: Cime de la Bonette, the roof of this year’s Tour de France and the highest road in the Alps. A super nice steady climb in perfect weather conditions, followed by a 50km !!! descent until the 2nd part of the route became quite hot. It ended again in a very nice hotel resort, where this time we cooked together in the apartment.
...and whoops, we were already on the last super hot stage to Nice. The 130km were definitely one of the highlights as far as the descents were concerned, hardly any traffic, wonderful serpentines and on the climb to the Col de la Madone we actually met the winner of this year’s Tour de France, Tadej PogaÄar, on his home lap, a 3 second fan moment đ Once we arrived in Nice, we had dinner together and then packed up, many of us had already left by bike or plane on Sunday morning… I still had time until the evening, so I went for a short bike ride (I still had a few kilometers to make up) and then packed up after a nice lunch. The flight from Nice to Berlin is short and relaxed, I don’t think I’ve been there for the last time…maybe when it’s not 35 degrees in the shade đ
